| "Never forget your roots
and the people who helped get you where you are," says Jennifer York, KTLA's
top-flight airborne traffic reporter. As an assistant producer on "Good
Morning America," Ms. York was inspired by news veterans Joel Siegel, Barbara
Walters and Erma Bombeck and credits them with shaping her honest and accurate
reporting skills. With a Bachelor of Science degree in political science
and communication fromUCLA in hand, York worked as a talent coordinator
for Pierre Cossette Productions, contributing to such shows as the "Grammy
Awards"and the "American Music Awards." In 1984 she headed east for "Good
Morning America" as an assistant producer to movie critic Joel Siegel.
Returning to Los Angeles in 1987, Ms. York landed in radio and developed
her traffic and spot news reporting skills at stations KFWB, KROQ, and
KRLA, among others. In 1989, York signed on with Metro Traffic and took
to the air reporting on traffic and breaking news for KFWB, one of Southern
California's radio news leaders. Combining her experience in television
and radio, in 1991, York joined the "KTLA Morning News" team, flying in
an aerospecial 350-B called "Skycam 5." Above and beyond her "Morning News"
duties, her coverage of earthquakes, floods and fires in Southern California,
sometimes flying more than 18 hours a day, has re-affirmed KTLA's commitment
to providing the best news coverage.
York's diligent reporting
over the Malibu fires paid off in 1993, when she was awarded her first
Emmy. Two more Emmy Awards, one for her coverage of the Northridge Earthquake,
and the other for her "Morning News" reports, followed, as well as two
Golden Mike Awards, one for Best Traffic Reporter 1998, and one for her
coverage of the Jewish Center shooting 1999.
York donates much of her
time to community events and activities including KTLA initiatives such
as KTLA Kids Day L. A.and the Los Angeles Latin Jazz Festival. She has
also been featured on many television shows such as CNN's "Larry King Live",
Entertainment Tonight, The Liza Show and "Live In L.A." with Steve Edwards.
While on the ground, York
is also a professional electric and acoustic bassist. She has recorded
two albums with the all woman christian rock group, "Rachel Rachel" on
Word Records. She recently finished her first album with her all-female
jazz group The York Trio titled "A Tribute to Friends".They have been together
six years playing in local jazz clubs and festivals, such as the Long Beach
Jazz Festival and the Playboy Jazz Festival in Pasadena. Always in pursuit
to fine-tune her craft, Ms. York has studied with Chris Hanulick, principal
bassist of the world-renowned LA Philharmonic Orchestra, John Clayton,
Bunny Brunel and is currently studying with jazz bassist John Leitham who
currently plays with Doc Sevrenson. York's passion for life, people and
music is tamper-proof and is apparent in everything she does |
